The Original Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge.
Not a Copy. Not the Río Frío. Not San Emilio. Not Los Chiles.
What is the Original Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge?
This information will be very helpful at the time you organize your travel around Costa Rica.
The Original Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge is one of Costa Rica’s most important wetland ecosystems. Created in 1984, this 10,171-hectare refuge is part of the Arenal Huetar Norte Conservation Area and was declared a RAMSAR Wetland of International Importance in 1991 — one of only two in Costa Rica.
The refuge centers on the Caño Negro lagoon — a shallow freshwater basin of approximately 800 hectares — and the Río Frío system, which together create one of the most biologically productive freshwater wetlands in Central America.
Unlike any other destination in the region, the Original Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge is a natural lagoon system — the only one on the north side of Costa Rica. This unique ecosystem supports over 300 bird species, countless mammals, reptiles, and amphibians, and is a critical habitat for migratory birds from North America.
To experience the real Caño Negro, you need to be inside the refuge — not on the river that feeds it. The entrance to the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge is located at the village of Caño Negro, where the road ends and the wetland begins. This is where the authentic experience starts — and where Hotel de Campo has been welcoming guests since 1998.

Know the Difference
When planning your visit to Caño Negro, it’s important to understand that not all tours are the same. Some operators offer experiences outside the official boundaries of the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge — on the Río Frío, near Los Chiles or San Emilio.
While these tours offer beautiful river scenery and wildlife viewing, they are not inside the refuge. The Río Frío is the river that feeds the Caño Negro lagoon — but the lagoon itself, the 800-hectare RAMSAR wetland, is where the true magic of Caño Negro happens.
Here’s the difference:
- The Río Frío: A river that flows through the region. Beautiful, but outside the official refuge boundaries.
- The Caño Negro Lagoon: A RAMSAR wetland of international importance, inside the refuge, home to over 300 bird species and the heart of the ecosystem.
To experience the Original Caño Negro, you need to go to the village of Caño Negro — not to Los Chiles, not to San Emilio.
At Hotel de Campo, we are located inside the refuge, right in front of the Caño Negro lagoon. Our guests wake up in the heart of the wetland, with wildlife at their doorstep. This is the authentic Caño Negro experience — the one that has been welcoming visitors since 1998.

Why a 1-Day Tour is Not the Best Way to Experience the Original Caño Negro
Every day is Caño Negro Experience
As far as you choose The Original Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge
If you’re searching for a Caño Negro 1 day tour from La Fortuna or Bijagua, you’re probably looking for the best way to experience this incredible RAMSAR wetland. A day trip might seem like the easiest option — but is it NOT the best way to experience the Original Caño Negro!
The truth is, a 1-day tour comes with significant trade-offs. You’ll spend more than 5 hours on the road, arrive late in the morning when wildlife activity is lower, and leave before the best hours begin. You’ll miss the sunrise and the sunset — the two most magical moments in the refuge.
What you miss on a 1-day tour:
- The sunrise — the best time for bird activity and photography
- The sunset — the golden hour when the light is perfect
- A relaxed breakfast — instead of rushing or skipping it entirely
- Multiple boat tours — a day trip limits you to one tour in the middle of the day
What you gain with an overnight stay at Hotel de Campo:
- Sunrise boat tour — the best time for bird activity and photography
- Relaxed breakfast at Hotel de Campo after your tour
- More time in the field — with private or shared tours tailored to your interests
- A truly immersive experience — waking up next to the refuge, not in a hotel hours away
A 1-day tour gets you there. An overnight stay gets you the experience.
