Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge is a large protected area on the north side of Costa Rica.
It is located south of the Nicaraguan border, between Upala and Los Chiles. Besides the remote location, it is easy to reach Caño Negro all-around the year. Along road 138, you can drive to Caño Negro from the north (7 km before Los Chiles), or from the south. From the south, the entrance is located at Colonia de Puntarenas, 20 km east from Upala or 15 km west from Katira.
From a major touristic area, Caño Negro is almost 3 hrs far from Arenal, and almost 2 hrs from Tenorio-Bijagua.

Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge is the home of more than 200 species of birds, 3 kinds of monkeys (howler, spider, and capuchin monkeys), turtles, caimans, and some crocodiles, sloths, iguanas, anteater, and more.
