Our Nature Lovers packages combine accommodation at Hotel de Campo, meals and wildlife experiences inside Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge.

Each package includes a specific combination of services according to its duration. The packages can also be personalised, so you can add additional boat tours or other available experiences according to your interests and the time you have in Caño Negro.

At Hotel de Campo, semi-private means a small group with a maximum of eight passengers per boat.

Rather than operating large-group excursions, we keep our Nature Lovers wildlife tours small. This creates a quieter, more personal atmosphere on the water and gives you more opportunity to observe wildlife and enjoy the wetlands and landscapes of Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge.

Our semi-private Nature Lovers boat tours are for adults only.

Families travelling with children can still experience Caño Negro with Hotel de Campo, but they need to choose an experience with a private boat tour. This allows the trip to be adapted to the needs and pace of the family.

Yes. Each Nature Lovers package includes a specific combination of services, but your experience can be personalised.

If you would like to spend more time exploring Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge, you can add additional boat tours or other available experiences to your package, depending on your interests, the length of your stay and availability.

Staying additional nights also gives you more time to enjoy Caño Negro itself — the lagoon, botanical garden, wildlife around Hotel de Campo, local food and pool — while giving you the option to include more activities if you wish.

Your package gives you a starting point; it does not limit what you can experience during your stay.

Nature Lovers experiences are designed for travellers who want to discover the wildlife, wetlands and landscapes of Caño Negro without organising their visit around a specialised objective.

Our Birding & Photography experiences are designed for guests travelling with a specific objective such as birdwatching, wildlife photography, video or sound recording. These experiences use private boats so that time on the water can be adapted to target species, light, wildlife behaviour and the guest's particular objectives.

Both are ways of experiencing the same extraordinary wetland. The difference is the traveller's objective and the way the experience is organised.

Caño Negro offers wildlife observation throughout the year, but the experience changes with the seasons and water levels.

The dry season generally concentrates wildlife around remaining waterways and lagoons, while the rainy season transforms the refuge as water spreads across the wetland and creates different landscapes, habitats and wildlife opportunities.

There is therefore no single season that is best for every traveller. What you see depends on the time of year, water conditions and natural wildlife activity during your visit.

We recommend staying at least one night rather than experiencing Caño Negro only as a short excursion.

One night gives you a focused introduction to the destination. Two nights provide a more relaxed experience, while three nights allow you to slow down and enjoy not only the wildlife tour but also Hotel de Campo, the lagoon, nature around the property and Caño Negro itself.

The right choice depends on your itinerary, but additional nights give you something particularly valuable when travelling through Costa Rica: time.

Staying overnight allows you to experience Caño Negro as a destination rather than spending much of the day travelling to and from it.

A day trip from La Fortuna can introduce you to the refuge, but staying in Caño Negro gives you more time around the wetland and lets you experience the destination at a different pace.

At Hotel de Campo, you stay beside the refuge and directly in front of the lagoon, with accommodation, meals and your wildlife experience in one place. You wake up in Caño Negro and begin your experience where you are staying.
