Looking for Caño Negro Birding Tour?
The great way to Experience the Refuge is choosing the 1 Best Jabiru Birding Costa Rica Vacation Package
More Time for Birding, Photography and Wildlife in Caño Negro
If you are travelling to Caño Negro specifically for birdwatching, wildlife photography, video or sound recording, having more time in the refuge gives you something a short visit cannot: the flexibility to work with changing light, weather, wildlife activity and your own target species.
The Jabiru Package gives you 4 days / 3 nights in Caño Negro, with three private boat tours and up to 11 hours on the water. Instead of concentrating your experience into a single outing, you can explore the wetland at different times and adapt your time in the refuge to what is happening in the field.
Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge is a wetland of international importance and one of Costa Rica’s distinctive birding destinations. Species such as the Jabiru, Agami Heron, Black-collared Hawk, Nicaraguan Grackle and Sungrebe are among the birds that make the area particularly interesting for visiting birders.
More time does not guarantee a particular sighting. What it gives you is more opportunity: different hours, different conditions and greater flexibility to wait, observe, photograph or continue exploring.
The Advantage of an Overnight Stay — More Time in the Field, Better Light, Better Photos
A day trip from La Fortuna or Bijagua can introduce you to Caño Negro, but it also requires several hours of travelling to and from the destination. For birdwatchers and wildlife photographers, a day trip means less control over when you are on the water and fewer opportunities to experience the refuge under different conditions.
What becomes difficult on a day trip:
- Experiencing both the late-afternoon light and early-morning bird activity
- Returning to the refuge at different times of day
- Waiting longer when an interesting species or wildlife behaviour appears
- Adapting your time on the water to changing light, weather and wildlife activity
With three nights at Hotel de Campo, the Jabiru Package includes three private boat tours and 11 hours on the water. Your tours can take place at different times during your stay, giving you greater flexibility to work with early-morning activity, afternoon light and the conditions you encounter in the field.
Between tours, you can return to Hotel de Campo for breakfast or brunch, rest, prepare your equipment, explore the gardens or simply enjoy the surroundings before going back onto the water.
More time does not guarantee a particular species, including the Jabiru. It gives you more opportunities to explore the refuge under different conditions and adapt the experience to what is happening in the field.
Hotel de Campo is beside the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge, directly in front of the Caño Negro lagoon, with direct access to the wetland. This allows your birding and photography experience to begin from the property without travelling back and forth from another destination each day.
You can book directly with us and tell us what matters most to you — birdwatching, photography, video, sound recording or particular target species. We can then organise your time in Caño Negro around those interests, the season, weather conditions and wildlife activity.
Caño Negro — Easy to Visit, Rewarding for All, and Best Experienced with a 3-Night Stay
Caño Negro is accessible to everyone. Whether you’re a beginner birdwatcher, a seasoned birder, or a wildlife photographer, this refuge offers an unparalleled experience.
You can visit Caño Negro independently — drive along Route 138 to the village of Caño Negro, located midway between Los Chiles and Upala. The road is bumpy, and yes, the area feels remote — but that’s exactly why the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge is so rich in biodiversity.
No hiking. No exhaustion. Just birds and wildlife.
All tours are conducted by boat, making Caño Negro one of the most accessible birding destinations in Costa Rica. You don’t need to be in peak physical condition. You don’t need to trek through dense jungle. You simply relax on a comfortable boat while our expert guides navigate the lagoons and rivers.
Caño Negro is a year-round destination. The dry season (December to April) offers spectacular bird activity as water recedes, concentrating wildlife around the remaining pools. The rainy season brings lush landscapes and fewer visitors, offering a more intimate experience.
But here’s the key: to truly experience Caño Negro — and to capture its beauty with your camera — a 3-night stay makes all the difference.
Hotel de Campo is the only hotel located right in front of one of the major lagoons of the Caño Negro wetland, inside the refuge boundaries. You wake up in the heart of the RAMSAR site, with wildlife at your doorstep.
This remoteness is what makes Caño Negro a prime birdwatching hotspot and a destination for wildlife photography and nature observation.
And here’s the best part: you don’t need a third party to book your stay. You can reserve directly with us, and we’ll help you design the perfect birding or photography experience.
Driving to Caño Negro is possible. Staying 3 nights at Hotel de Campo is the best way to experience the refuge — and to capture its beauty with your camera.
Jabiru Package — 3 Nights / 4 Days: Private Tours for Birders and Photographers
The Jabiru Package is designed for birdwatchers, wildlife photographers, videographers and sound recordists who want more time and flexibility inside the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge. With three nights at Hotel de Campo and three private boat tours, you can experience the wetland at different times and adapt your time on the water to wildlife activity, light, weather and your own objectives.
With 11 hours of private boat tours, the advantage is not simply spending more time on the water. It is having more opportunities to explore different areas and conditions, wait when something interesting is happening, work with a target species or wildlife behaviour, and return to the refuge at another time of day.
What’s Included
- 3 overnight stays at Hotel de Campo — beside the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge and directly in front of the Caño Negro lagoon
- 3 private boat tours inside the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge — 11 hours total
- 3 dinners
- 3 breakfasts or brunches
The Jabiru is one of the target species that birdwatchers come to Caño Negro hoping to observe, but no particular wildlife sighting can be guaranteed. The value of the Jabiru Package is the additional time and flexibility it gives you to experience the refuge under different conditions.

Private Boat — More Control Over Your Experience
For birdwatchers, wildlife photographers, videographers and sound recordists, the advantage of a private boat is the flexibility it gives you in the field. Your group does not have to follow the pace or interests of other passengers, allowing the experience to respond more closely to what you want to accomplish in Caño Negro.
This means:
- Your pace — stay longer when an interesting species or behaviour appears, or move on when you are ready
- Your focus — concentrate on target species, photography, video, sound recording or the wider diversity of the refuge
- Your positioning — when conditions allow, the boat can be positioned with your photographic or observation priorities in mind
- Your time — use your hours on the water according to what is happening in the field rather than following the fixed rhythm of a general wildlife tour
The private boat is not the objective. It is what makes a more specialised and flexible experience possible.
At Hotel de Campo, we combine this specialised experience with accommodation, meals and direct access to the wetland, offering birders and photographers a premium experience at a competitive price.
If you have particular target species or specific photography, video or sound-recording objectives, let us know when you book. We can use that information to help organise your experience according to your interests, the season, weather conditions and wildlife activity.

Useful Tips for #1 Best Jabiru Birding Costa Rica
Frequently Asked Questions About the Jabiru Birding Package
Planning a birding or wildlife photography experience in Caño Negro? These answers explain when to look for Jabiru, how the Jabiru Package works, why more time in the wetland matters, and how you can personalise your experience.
Why is the Jabiru such an iconic bird in Costa Rica?
The Jabiru (Jabiru mycteria) is one of the most distinctive birds of the wetlands of northern Costa Rica and an important target species for many birdwatchers and wildlife photographers visiting Caño Negro.
Its enormous size and unmistakable appearance make an encounter particularly memorable, but looking for Jabiru also takes you into the wider wetland ecosystem where many of Caño Negro’s characteristic birds and other wildlife can be found.
What is the best time of year to see the Jabiru in Caño Negro?
December to April is the best time of year to look for Jabiru in Caño Negro. Seasonal changes in the wetland affect water levels, feeding areas and where birds can be found, so conditions and locations change progressively throughout this period.
However, Caño Negro is a dynamic wetland and wildlife does not follow a fixed calendar. Water levels, weather and other environmental conditions influence where birds are found from one year to another.
Is seeing a Jabiru guaranteed with the Jabiru Package?
No. The Jabiru is a wild bird and no particular wildlife sighting can be guaranteed.
What the Jabiru Package gives you is more field time: three private boat tours and 11 hours on the water, allowing us to explore Caño Negro at different times and under different conditions.
For target species, more time gives us greater flexibility to respond to habitat conditions, recent observations and what is actually happening in the wetland during your stay.
Why do you recommend 3 nights for the Jabiru Package?
The Jabiru Package gives you 4 days / 3 nights in Caño Negro, with three private boat tours and 11 hours on the water. Instead of concentrating your birding or photography into a single outing, you experience the wetland at different times and under different conditions.
This gives you more opportunities to explore different areas, spend longer with interesting sightings, work with changing light, concentrate on target species and adapt your time on the water to what is actually happening in the field.
The programme also leaves the afternoon of Day 1 and the morning of Day 4 available for additional private boat tours, according to availability, if you want to personalise your experience with even more time in the refuge.
Do I need to be an expert birdwatcher to choose the Jabiru Package?
No. Birding packages are about your interests, not your level of expertise. You do not need to be an expert birder or arrive with a long target list.
If your main reason for visiting Caño Negro is birdwatching, wildlife photography, video or sound recording, the private boat gives you the flexibility these activities require.
Some guests arrive with specific target species. Others simply want enough time to observe, photograph and enjoy the diversity of the wetland without following the pace and interests of a general wildlife tour.
What other bird species can I look for in Caño Negro?
Caño Negro is much more than a destination for the Jabiru. Its lagoons, rivers, flooded areas and surrounding vegetation provide habitat for a remarkable diversity of resident and migratory birds.
Depending on the season and conditions, target species can include Agami Heron, Black-collared Hawk, Nicaraguan Grackle, Sungrebe, Yellow-breasted Crake, Snowy Cotinga, Roseate Spoonbill and Wood Stork, as well as several species of kingfishers, herons, ibises and other wetland birds.
Which species we find depends on the season, water levels, habitat conditions and the movements of wild birds. No particular species can be guaranteed.
Can I add more birding or photography tours to the Jabiru Package?
Yes. The Jabiru Package includes three private boat tours and 11 hours on the water, but you can add more field time.
The afternoon of Day 1 and the morning of Day 4 provide natural opportunities to add another private boat tour, according to availability.
This allows you to personalise the package around your target species, wildlife photography, video or sound-recording objectives, or simply spend more time exploring Caño Negro.
Can I combine birding with other activities during my stay?
Yes. The Jabiru Package combines intensive field time with free time at Hotel de Campo. Between tours, you can relax by the pool, explore the botanical garden, photograph birds and other wildlife around the property, prepare your equipment or simply enjoy Caño Negro at a slower pace.
If you have other interests or activities in mind, tell us when you contact us and we can help you personalise your stay.
What should I bring for birding and wildlife photography in Caño Negro?
Caño Negro has a warm tropical climate and your birding experience takes place primarily from the boat. We recommend bringing binoculars, a camera and telephoto lens if photography is part of your trip, extra batteries and memory cards, and protection for photographic or recording equipment.
Light, comfortable clothing, a hat, sunscreen and a lightweight rain jacket are recommended. Insect repellent is useful to have, although mosquitoes are generally not a major problem during our boat tours. Bring water for longer outings.
Our boats have a roof, providing shade and protection from light rain while allowing you to observe and photograph wildlife from the boat.
