What Makes Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge Special — and Why Location Matters
Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge is one of Costa Rica’s most important wetland ecosystems. Created in 1984, this 10,171-hectare refuge is part of the Arenal Huetar Norte Conservation Area and was declared a RAMSAR Wetland of International Importance in 1991.
The refuge centres on the Caño Negro lagoon — a shallow freshwater basin of approximately 800 hectares — and the Río Frío system, which together create one of the most biologically productive freshwater wetlands in Central America.
Río Frío vs. Caño Negro Lagoon — What’s the Difference?
This is an important distinction that many travelers don’t realize: the Río Frío is not the refuge itself.
The Río Frío is the river that flows into and feeds the Caño Negro lagoon. Many tours from La Fortuna operate only on the Río Frío, outside the official boundaries of the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge. While the river offers good wildlife viewing, it does not provide the full experience of the lagoon ecosystem and the spectacular concentrations of birds that gather when the water recedes during the dry season.

A Wetland of International Importance
The Caño Negro lagoon is fed by the Río Frío and its tributary, the Río Mónico. During the rainy season (May to January), the river overflows its banks and the lagoon expands to flood thousands of hectares of surrounding floodplain forest and grassland.
During the dry season (December to April), the water recedes, concentrating wildlife around the remaining pools and canals. This is the best time for wildlife viewing — and when you’ll see the most impressive concentrations of migratory birds from North America.

Our boats have a roof for protection from the sun and rain, but weather conditions in a tropical wetland can change quickly, so a lightweight waterproof jacket is useful.
